The Gates Blog Tour

The Gates
The Resistance Trilogy, #2
By Rachael Wade

Getting There is Half the Battle...

Armed with more unsettling knowledge about Gavin Devereaux and her circle of friends, Camille Hart is faced with new adversities and lethal propositions when she returns to the Amaranth exile to carry out Gavin’s risky crusade.

Realizing her journey through the bayou was only the beginning of her struggle to stay with Gavin, she finds that leaving her Louisiana home is the least of her worries. New evils await her on the other side, and as she and her friends press on with their mission, they are confronted with the reality that everything doesn't always go according to plan.

As secrets unfold and alliances are formed and broken, only the strongest will survive and the power of love will be tested when a war between witches, humans, and vampires erupts into an all-out power struggle and all is on the verge of being lost.

 In case you missed it:

An interview with Rachel Wade:

1. What was your inspiration for this story?

I was really inspired by Tim Burton and his version of Alice in Wonderland in particular. Also tons of music, especially Florence and the Machine. I must’ve listened to Seven Devils until my ears bled. I love epic fantasy, and I recall watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy (for the thousandth time) while writing this, so that inspired me as well.

2. Do you have music in mind when you are in writing mode?

Always. Music and writing are synonymous for me. Listening to music before I write scenes is really crucial to my writing process. I have to listen and visualize the scenes, meditate on them, before I sit down to write.
3. What paranormal being would you be if you could chose?

I’d be a vampire. I always get the “ew” reaction when I choose that over a fairy or something haha. I guess in a traditional sense, they are pretty gross creatures. But they’re also mysterious and sensual, and in recent years, have evolved into these superhuman beings, which I love even more. I’d love to have that superhuman strength.

4. Are you a outliner or a seat of your pants writer?

Both. When I began writing the Resistance Trilogy, I had a very organized, rigid structure as far as outlining went. And to some extent, I still always need a loose outline to work with. But lately, I don’t stick to those outlines very much. I prefer to start with a loose outline and then just write, see where it takes me. That’s always more fun and the plot and characters end up surprising me more that way.
5. What is your next writing project?

Right now I’m wrapping up The Tragedy of Knowledge, book 3 of The Resistance Trilogy, which picks up right where The Gates leaves off, and I’m also working on Repossession, the first book in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi romance series, the Keepers Trilogy, which is set to release in December.

6. What was the hardest scene that you have ever written and why?
Tough question. So far, I guess I’d say a scene in Preservation that involved the issue of rape. That whole novel was very personal and that scene hit close to home, but it was empowering to write and really helped give me some closure.
Thanks for having me! :)

Excerpt One:

The twelve vampires all joined together in a circle, waiting for Gavin’s direction, flashlights in hand, game faces on. Scarlet leaned back toward the magic oak, draped her arms across the rugged branch that held the key to our entry, sultry and comfortable in tight-fitting pants and a revealing halter top. Hussy. Must have read the wrong dress code. We weren’t headed for Studio 54, for crying out loud.

“As discussed, it’s imperative to keep your mojo bag on you, as close to your skin as possible, at all times. Keep it out of sight, under your clothes, and be sure to feed it with the oils I gave you intermittently, or the spells will wear out and we can’t have that.” Gavin spoke loud and authoritative. It was a tone I wasn’t used to hearing him take: one full of power, possession, and most of all, determination. He was such a leader. It was … hot. I smiled to myself, mesmerized as I watched him speak, dagger in hand, dressed in black jeans and a faded gray shirt, tousled brown hair as perfect as ever.

As I admired him, I noticed Scarlet staring intently, too, her eyes catching mine. There was a glint in them, an unspoken challenge that made me furious. Her coy smile made me even more agitated. Where was my jealousy coming from? It was so strong, so urgent, getting harder to contain by the second. Gavin had already assured me she was nothing to worry about. But something about her seared my skin, sank into my bones and settled there, leaving me on edge. I looked away, focusing again on Gavin’s pep talk.

“We’ve had an advantage, an extra defense against humans, against those who practice hoodoo—the ability to be unaffected by their magic. And yet, we can use their magic among our own kind. Their magic isn’t limited to Samira and GĂ©rard’s use, although they love for us to think that. An original conjurer, a good friend of ours, has gone out of her way to help create these protection spells for us. They are just as strong as Samira’s magic, and will keep us safe when we approach her. They’ll also give us copious amounts of energy to thrive.”

My thoughts trailed to Vivienne and her haint blue shop behind the pizzeria, her cautious eyes and generous heart. She really wanted to help us, even though she wasn’t sure what it would mean for her people, and even though the frozen souls had disrespected her magic, her faith, for all of these years. I smiled at the thought, thankful for the sweet, wise old woman.

Gavin began meandering around the inside of the circle, locking vision with each vampire. “Samira has no idea we have a conjurer’s help, and no idea we’ve acquired this amount of energy. Even if she doesn’t reveal it, she’ll be surprised that our magic is able to withstand her own. Stand strong, and stand tall. Do not falter, because the time is coming, and her kingdom will fall. Remember to be on guard within the villages. We don’t know for certain the conditions we face. We must gain the peoples’ trust, even as we show Samira that she can trust us to restore her order. Our obedience is the only thing that will keep her unaware until the rest of the resistance arrives to help us.”

“What if we don’t make it past the moat?” one of the twelve stammered, shaking in obvious fear.
Gavin stopped in the middle of the circle and turned to him. “The moat? We will make it through the gates.”
The nervous vampire reluctantly shook his head, taking a deep breath.

“Of this, I am certain.” Gavin gave the vampire a firm nod, then shouted, “To strong will and sweet freedom!” He waved his hands to encourage his people. Everyone took the cue, shouting in unison, repeating his words, chanting them. He stormed toward me, eyes blazing, his fiery gaze taking me by surprise. It made me melt, witnessing him take such control, but then I  shivered as I felt the bayou’s temperature begin to drop, calling us toward the portal, tempting us to pull the branch and unlock the gateway.

“You’re really ready for this, aren’t you?” I asked him as he grabbed his bag.

“This is going to work. I know it. My parents will finally have peace.” He reached up and ran his fingers over his mother’s locket around my neck, then gave me a breathtaking smile and pulled me into his embrace, kissed me hard and desperately.

The group’s energy buzzed, everyone chattering and pumping one another up. When Gavin let go of me, I surveyed the bayou and swallowed, realizing this was it. I’d somehow managed to entangle myself in the beginning of a vampire war. I was no longer that book-nerd loner girl from Louisiana, no longer the damaged girl from Seattle who once put up with so much abuse from men.
I was now Gavin’s support, love and future, and he was mine. Better yet, he encouraged my personal dreams despite his all-consuming lifestyle. He didn’t want me to give myself up, even though I was lost in all of his madness. My new path was suddenly tangible beneath my feet, although I couldn’t quite see it brick for brick yet. Hope bloomed in me, and the same energy that now possessed Gavin filled me too. I was ready for this, ready to do anything for this man, for these people, for our friends. Purpose panged my stomach and I was overwhelmed with the need for justice.

“Scarlet,” Gavin called to her while taking my hand. She raised her eyebrows and smiled at him, slowly, lasciviously, keeping her eyes on his as she snapped the oak’s branch. My green envy flared at the sight.

The gorgeous violet light over the bayou began to illuminate the murky water, lighting up our surroundings more and more, the wind dancing around us with fury. The water churned, and it was time.

Excerpt Two:

He clutched me in his arms and his fiery gaze danced across my body. “Can we talk about it after?”

“What? Gav, we need to talk about it now. What are we going to do—? And after what exactly?”

“After I taste you.” He dipped his mouth down to mine, letting his tongue slip between my lips. The panic I felt passed through me and a soft moan replaced the tension. I melted in his arms and slipped my hands around his neck, pressed my body harder to his, pulling down on his cloak to peel it over his shoulders.

He spun me around and pushed me up against the door, leaning his weight against my back to pin me to it with his hips. Angling my chin to the side so he could see my mouth, his other hand clasped the side of my waist and his breath flickered hot in my hair. “You don’t know how good you taste,” he breathed, finding my elbow and gently rubbing his thumb across my thick bandage. “This feeling okay? I’ll be gentle with it, I promise.”

Mhhmm. It’s better.” I welcomed his soft strokes over the crease of my elbow and swiveled my head farther back, to bring my lips closer to his.

He leaned in and looked at my lips with wonder before he kissed them hungrily again, his hands gliding down the sides of my hips to clutch my rear. “I can’t promise the same for this delicious backside, though.”

“No safety pin today,” I whispered against his jaw.

He snatched up my skirt, tore it straight down the middle and gathered it near my waist. “Won’t be needing it.”

“Gavin! What’ll I wear home?”

“Cloak.” His voice roughened and he ripped harder, tossing the material to the ground. I felt his smile when he kissed my neck, and shivers ran down my back at the sound of his low growl.
“I made that! I don’t have many of those, you know.”

“Cam,” he snaked one hand around my stomach and made his way north, slipping one hand into my corset top to grope my chest. “You won’t be thinking about it when I’m inside you.” His hips shifted off my back and he separated my legs with his knee, his breathing ragged against my shoulder. “Now forget the damn dress.” Keeping my head pressed to the side of the door, I could see him pull at his shirt collar to loosen it, which instantly made my knees shake and my pulse thump with desire. Unsure if I’d be able to hold myself up as he had his way with me from behind, I knew the image of him there would be my undoing. There was nothing sexier than seeing this normally shy, composed man morph into a voracious creature with such insatiable, starved need in his rich, chocolate eyes. And the sleeves rolled to his elbows … that wasn’t helping.

I snuck a glance at his forearms. Nope, not helping at all.

He ran his fingers down my back and licked his lips, the sensations of his fingertips over my spine making my head spin. Before I had time to muster my strength, I heard his zipper and felt him jerk my slip aside. He slid into me and leaned close again, his jaw slack at the side of my face. I palmed the door with my good hand and reached back to latch onto the side of his hip with the other, his name spilling from my lips as he drove into me.

“I adore you, do you know that?” he murmured against my ear, his panting feeding my fervor and sending my desire into an irrepressible frenzy. “I’m yours always, baby.”

I gripped the door harder for support and dug my nails into his hip to return the passion, closing my eyes when his cries seeped into my ear. They were too much. “Gavin, please …” He thrust harder, a desperate urgency in each sharp charge, stirring my release, coaxing it into a ferocious delirium, spinning it out of control. He lifted a hand and trailed fingers over my lips, tilting and crushing his mouth on mine to silence my whimpering.

“Not yet,” he sighed against my lips and wrenched my hair back, forcing me to arch against his chest, tightening his grip on my waist before running his other hand down my front to cup it between my thighs. “Ask me again.”

“Please,” my voice hummed, barely audible as he skimmed his nose over my neck, his fingers kneading in front while he buried himself in me.

“Please, what. Tell me.”

“Please, Gavin. Let me go.”

I felt him slow and readjust his stance, then slide in deeper and pick up speed, pushing me farther and farther into luscious oblivion from behind, his fingers continuing to torture in front. “Mmm. I love hearing that.”

His forehead grazed my cheek and his sweat stuck to my skin, a sweet, heady aroma that sent my knees quaking. I cried out, feeling myself quicken, his strangled moan causing my body to cave against the door as I found my release.

“Cam … damn it.…” He pulled his hand from my thighs and braced the door next to my face, his palm spreading over the dark, battered wood, his fingers close enough for me to taste. My eyes fluttered and found his, their scorching warm glow penetrating me with crazed longing. His breath hissed and he reached his climax, hauling his fingertips through my hair and over my scalp as he stilled, my name escaping his lips one last time.

I let myself slump against his shoulder while he rested his forehead on the door, one arm drawn close around my waist to hold me upright.

“Love, making it out of this place alive is the least of my worries. If you keep making me crazy like that, you’ll be the death of me.” He snickered against my neck, his lips kissing my wet skin.

“Well,” I panted, “if you ravage me like that again, there’s a very good chance you’ll take me with you.”

What I Liked:

This book is a continuation of a series choc full of vampires and voodoo witchery. The first book was good and this one just gets better. The seductive sex scenes are smokin' hot and nothing makes me happier than to have a sexy book tucked in for a summer nights reading.

What I Didn't:

If you haven't read the first book in the series, you will be a bit lost if you start with The Gates. You may want to pick up Amaranth to get the story background.

Overall:

The Gates is a continuation of a series and I found the writing style even better than the first book and story line gripping. The politics of the vampires and the voodoo fun will keep you turning the pages on a hot summer night. Fans of True Blood and Discovery of Witches will love this series.

Her Loving Husband's Curse Blog Tour and Guest Post

Her Loving Husband’s Curse
Book Two of The Loving Husband Trilogy
By Meredith Allard

How far will you go to protect the one you love?

Finally, after many long and lonely years, James Wentworth’s life is falling into place. Together with his wife, Sarah, the only woman he has ever loved, he has found the meaning behind her nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and now they are rebuilding the life they began together so long ago.

But the past is never far behind for the Wentworths. While Sarah is haunted by new visions, now about the baby she carried over three hundred years before, James is confronted with painful memories from his time with the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears. Through it all, the persistent reporter Kenneth Hempel reappears, still determined to prove that the undead walk the earth. If Hempel succeeds in his quest, James and Sarah will suffer. Will the curse of the vampire prevent James and Sarah from living their happily ever after?

In case you  missed it:

How long would you wait for the one you loved?

James Wentworth has a secret. He lives quietly in Salem, Massachusetts, making few ties anywhere. One night his private world is turned upside down when he meets Sarah Alexander, a dead ringer for his wife Elizabeth. Though it has been years since Elizabeth's death, James cannot move on.

Sarah also has a secret. She is haunted by nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and every night she is awakened by visions of hangings, being arrested, and dying in jail. Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. Soon James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again?

Her Dear & Loving Husband is part historical fiction, part romance, and part paranormal fantasy. With elements of Twilight and The Crucible, Her Dear & Loving Husband is a story for anyone who believes that true love never dies.

 Guest Post

Double, double, toil, and trouble. That’s how I used to picture witches, like the three witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth—craggy-faced crones standing over a bubbling black cauldron calling out their spells and curses. I learned differently when I wrote Her Dear and Loving Husband. Mainly, I learned the word witch is a lot bigger than I thought.

I have this odd habit of writing about topics I’m not all that familiar with before I write about them. I would certainly put witches in that category. I had a lot of research to do about the Salem Witch Trials before I wrote my Loving Husband books, and I was surprised to learn the Salem witches weren’t witches at all but normal people like you and me who were falsely accused of witchcraft for unfortunate all-too-human reasons. As I thought about how to incorporate the story of the Salem Witch Trials into my present-day vampire story, I decided two of the supporting characters would be Jennifer and Olivia, a mother/daughter duo who are Wiccan, but there’s more to them than nature worship. For my research for Her Dear and Loving Husband, I had to read up on what a Wiccan was and how the word witch associates with it. After I read about Wiccans, I began to see how Jennifer and Olivia could show the best of what it means to be Wiccan…and a witch. They have their ceremonies celebrating the seasons with their coven, and Jennifer, as the high priestess, is even licensed to perform weddings in Massachusetts. But then sometimes bottles shatter suddenly, there’s Olivia ability to read the prophecies during psychic readings, and there’s something odd about Jennifer’s intuition…

As I researched the present-day town of Salem, Massachusetts, I learned that Wiccans, witches, and spirituality are a huge part of life there today. In the book, Olivia has a shop like The Psychic Eye—one that sells incense, crystal balls, prayer beads, and books of spells. I was so excited to learn (and see for myself when I was in Salem) that there are many such shops there. There’s a strong Wiccan community in Salem, so Jennifer and Olivia fit right in. Where in 1692 Salem wasn’t a great place for witches (or the people accused of being witches), in 2012 Salem and witches go together just fine.

That works out well for Jennifer and Olivia. They help James, the vampire in the story, understand his connection to the past in a way only they can. After all, who sees things more clearly than a witch?

I quite agree.

What I Liked:

When I started reading Her Loving Husband's Curse, I was ready for a witchy read, but nothing prepared me for the depth of feeling Meredith Allard put into this book. The description of the Salem Witch Trial museum and the events from the trials themselves made tears come to my eyes, as did the nightmares from the main character, Sarah. I have thought about this period in history and it makes me very sad and bitterly angry that women and yes, some men were treated in this fashion.

I also loved the devotion between James, the husband and Sarah, who was Elizabeth in the time of the trials. This book was very moving in a Twilight-esque sort of way with the timelessness of the love between two people surmounting incredible odds.

What I Didn't:

Not a thing. I will be waiting for more from this author.

Overall:

This book pulled on my heart strings. References to witch trials and the agony suffered by innocents always do. This one in particular really grabbed at events from the past and breathed new life into horrors long forgotten. Combine that will an epic love story, I found myself tearing up and reading faster and faster. This is a great read and I will be looking forward to more releases from this author.

Superheros Wear Faded Denim Blog Tour

Superhereos Wear Faded Denim
by Law Reigns

Blissany Cherry is tired of sleeping around. Her neurologists’ sleep solutions have failed her. Now that her bizarre sleeping habits have begun to include week long dreams she has resorted to her own methods for a cure.

METHOD ONE: CONTROL DREAMS. All attempts to morph dreams about a gorgeous warrior into romantic fantasies are thwarted. He keeps on insisting she is destined to marry a great king and lead their armies into war. At the end of every dream he asks her: will you fight the war and save mankind?

She laughs in his face.

METHOD TWO: RESIST! Blissany has plans for her life. None include fighting an intergalactic war.  When her dreams begin spilling over into reality, she is forced to make a decision that will forever redefine her life. Standing between destiny and desire, she is left with only one option.

METHOD THREE: SURVIVE.

What inspired you to start writing?

Two things: 1. Love of the craft, 2. The ability to weave world issues into my novel. Writing has always been like going to a spa for me. Not only does it make me happy, but it just relieves all sorts of stress. Plus, I always try to make the story more relatable by weaving current events into the tale.

What is the funniest scene you have ever written?

This scene was one of the most memorable kiss scenes in
Superheroes Wear Faded Denim. An excerpt from chapter two of
my new adult fantasy romance, Blissany Cherry learns teen novels
may not always be the best instruction manuals for learning how to seduce a man.

Faded Denim excerpt:

This is it!  Gabriel was obviously in pain. She feared her favorite romance novels had not prepared her as much as she thought, but there was no better place to make love. Intricate portraits hung along the walls. Plush, red carpet led up to a fireplace surrounded by antiquated books inscribed in Latin. A balcony leading out to a view of open sky was behind them. Everything felt so right. Her chance to comfort Gabriel like the lover she so yearned to be had finally come.

Intuitively Gabriel lowered his hands, “I’m sorry.” Those two words were his favorite.
She rested her fingers just above his belly button.
Brows furrowing, Gabriel stared at her puzzled. She swore there were leaves falling in his pupils.
She leaned forward.
“Blissany . . . what are—?”
She kissed him. His lips were sweet and soft like cotton candy. When she pulled away, her lids fluttered open to see nothing, but red.
Flustered, Gabriel moved from the couch. “That was . . . that was . . .” he searched his armoire for a shirt with gaping holes for his wings. He even threw on a red fanon for good measure.
“Um . . . I . . .” he refused to look at Blissany.
She knew that she had done something wrong. Something in her had wished that Gabriel would have kissed her back. He had to want her, otherwise why would he have her awake in his bed every morning only to feed her biscuits? She was dressed in a silk gown that clung to her figure. These gowns were made for lovers.
“That is—was… Michael,” Gabriel stuttered unable to form a coherent sentence. He was ready to fully ignore what just happened. “He is Nivide’s personal assistant, ranked the First Highest of all the High Custodiae. He arrived today to discuss what happened earlier.”
“That’s nice.” Please tell me my kiss wasn’t out of place. She felt like an idiot. Things weren’t going like they did in the urban fantasies she read except she was talking to a man with wings.
“Shall we breakfast on the balcony?” Gabriel drew her attention back to him. He refrained from touching her as they walked to the balcony.
Eating on the balcony was usually the high point of her dream. It was beautiful out there. Up so high people rode by on solid masses of clouds. All were dressed in exotic cloaks. Now the same beauty failed to move her. Gabriel offered her a sort of golden tint tea. She stared blankly at it saying nothing.
“This is straneyberry tea,” he continued, filling the silence. He showed her the fruit. It was large, red, and shaped like a heart. The outside of the fruit were lined with seeds. She burst the seeds on accident with her nails. Honey splattered dripping down her fingers. She licked them unconsciously. Gabriel should have kissed me passionately.

“Blissany,” he began.
A couple of winged beings flew out windows and past Gabriel’s balcony. They uttered, “Salve,” as they flew by. These winged beings were always male, always beautiful. She should have stuck to dreaming about horribly nerdy, unattractive males. Those were the only ones that would kiss her.
“Blissany,” he called again. He offered her cookies made of sun dew. She took three absentmindedly. The syrupy-doe bread would make her feel better.
“Please listen to me.”
“What’s wrong with me?” She asked.

Do you have a playlist for Superheroes?

I do not have a particular play list. With that said, I did listen to a lot of B.B King, Kings of Leon, and 30 Seconds To Mars when writing this story.  I feel like the artists I named wrote a lot of songs relating to the themes in my novel: war, pain, searching, self-fulfillment, and having a good time.

Destiny is a funny thing. Do you think we are fated to do the things we do, or does free will come into it?

To me, it is a combination of both. I am one of those people who believe we all have a purpose. Somewhere deep inside of us is a burning desire to achieve something that must be done. Although a road map has been laid out for us long before we were born, lightening is not going to strike us down if we decide to do things our own way. That is where free will comes into play. Me being the rebel that I am, I am all for people living their life.

What are some authors that have influenced your work?

It is hard to say. Some of the authors I most admire are Juliet Marillier, Eileen Wilks, Jeff Lindsay, Stieg Larsson, and James Patterson.

If you could tell an aspiring author one thing, what would it be?

Someone once told me to pay attention. You’d be surprised how many things happen to us every day that would liven a scene. Such as writing a cafĂ© scene. If I am in a cafĂ©, what are some things I can steal from my personal cafĂ© experience to make a cafĂ© scene in a novel more believable?
Some of the best stories out there steal from everyday life. A story may even be right in front of your nose.

What is your next writing project?

Currently I am working on the second book to Superheroes Wear Faded Denim and another story currently titled Voodoo Kisses. Those I hope to have released near the end of s2013.

Why this story:

I wrote this story for three reasons:

1.      As a narcoleptic, I wanted to inspire others by writing a story about a character who struggles to overcome sleep. Harriet Tubman’s story inspired me. For those who do not know, she was also a narcoleptic. She most certainly did not let it bother her. Anyone who faces obstacles in life will be inspired by this story of triumph.

2.      Telling the story of a young woman who had to undergo a transformation to achieve greatness was important to me. Life will always ask more of us, more than we sometimes even think we can give.

3.      I wanted to capture the beauty and culture of my college experience. There are so many different types of people we meet in college. Many stories do not even try to convey this.

What I Liked:

This book is a cross between YA, romance and fantasy. The wraith in the department store at the beginning of the story and the angel story that unfolds is interesting and worth pursuing. The cosmic battle between good and evil with humanity hanging in the balance is a great theme.

What I Didn't:

The names of some of the characters were difficult to say. The introduction to Blissany's ability to see the supernatural was strange at first and I wanted her to fight against what she was experiencing with Wanikiya and have more of a struggle going into the angelic battle that ensued in the department store.

Overall:

If you enjoy books with a YA flavor, but have a high concentration of fantasy and some romance that play on a theme of destiny and celestial battles, then you will enjoy Superheroes. The names are difficult to get used to and the early battle scene that calls Blissany to her destined role is at first hard to absorb, but as it plays out, the story begins to flow nicely. The imagery invoked is epic and you can see the angels at war, deciding the fate of humanity. Dreams take her places that she never imagined were real, and now quite suddenly are. The separate courts described are like Heaven, Hell and the battle that rages daily in between on earth. Blood drinkers battle with angels to decide the fate of humanity. This book has some epic storytelling that fans of Halo will enjoy.

Guest Post with Nancy...

So a funning thing happened to me . . .

I should start this with:  I am a magnet for crazy.  Funning things happen to me all the time.  I tried to think about what you might like to read and settled on something that has nothing to do with being an author, book reviews, publishing, or anything of the sort.  I hope you enjoy this!

This happened about a year ago.  Like all moms, it was the end of the week and I was exhausted.  I was watching television with my husband in our bedroom and had dozed off.  It was still pretty early in the evening, so the lights were on, but when I’m tired I don’t need dark to sleep.  I was in the middle of a dream when I realized I couldn’t breathe.  I startled myself awake and pulled myself out of my dream only to realize:  I was now awake and I still couldn’t breathe.  I looked at my husband while I was gasping for air; he was watching me with a strange look, but did nothing to help me.
My hands instinctively went to my neck and I realized the t-shirt I was wearing was tight against my neck, so with both hands, I yanked the neck of my t-shirt as hard as I could.  I got air! But in the same instant I felt claws dig into my back.

Okay, I read a ton of Paranormal Romance, Paranormal Thrillers and Urban Fantasy books, so at this point my mind is racing through about 300 plots - trying to identify what beast I was up against!  I couldn’t get a word out but knew my husband could see the pleading for help in my eyes.  I let go of the neck of my t-shirt and the claws eased on my back, but once again, I didn’t have air.

After watching this cycle a couple times my husband simply said, “Flash is stuck.”

Flash is my very cute Jack Russell Terrier.  He burrows under the covers at night because he gets cold.  He had somehow burrowed under the back of my t-shirt and was trying to climb out through the neck of my shirt!  Needless to say, a person’s neck and a pudgy JRT do not both fit through a crew neck t-shirt.

We both got a good laugh out of it, and I was thrilled to see that I wasn’t under attack from some sort of paranormal beast!

Short Excerpt:

His words made my heart soar, my whole body felt warm and my heart rate began steadily gaining speed.  Knowing how badly this visit could have gone, I couldn’t help but push my luck, “Max, I need to ask you one more thing.  Could you stay just another minute?”

Max glanced at the watch on his wrist, and I could tell he really did need to leave.  “Yeah, but I’ve already been gone for way too long.  My partner’s got to be looking for me by now.”  He moved a hair closer to me, and I could hardly contain my excitement.

“I know this isn’t the best place, and I understand if you tell me no, but if I don’t ask, it’s going to drive me crazy.  I was wondering if you feel anything weird around me?”  This sounded so strange, but I didn’t know how best to articulate my question.  I needed to know if it was only my imagination.

Max looked me straight in the eye, “Weird, like what?”
I felt the flush of embarrassment on my cheeks as I asked quietly, “Like, chemistry, a little?”

Max stood still as a statue staring at me sitting almost straight up in my bed.  His smile faded a little as he leaned into me and whispered, “You mean like this?” He softly slid his hand behind my head, pulling my lips up to his.  Gentle at first, then increased intensity until I found that I had wrapped both my arms around him, wires protruding from every direction, and my entire body tingled.  I grew lightheaded as he eased his face away from mine.  He gently lowered my head back to my pillow and moved his hand to my face.  Max traced my lips with his index finger.  After a few outlines of my lips, he responded quietly, “Chemistry, huh?  No, I hadn’t noticed.”  His wide smile reappeared with a vengeance.
My heart monitor went crazy, jumping well into the 100s as an alarm blared to life as if to tell the world what had just happened.  Max reached over and pushed a button on the monitor and the alarm muted instantly.  As he leaned in for what I was sure was going to be just as passionate as our first kiss, his pocket beeped.
Max stopped, rolled his eyes and fished in his pocket, pulling out his blackberry.  He looked at the screen with disappointment in his eyes.  “Hey, we just got a call.  I really have to go.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for continuing this conversation tomorrow, but I really can’t stay.”

“I’d like that, too,” unable to say anything else.

He kissed my cheek, “I can’t wait to tell Missy about tonight.  Bye.”  Max darted out the door as he sprinted off to save someone’s life.  The jealous part of me hoped he was being called to help an old fat man.

What I Liked:

This book was an interesting blend of YA, paranormal romance and  fantasy. The cover made me think YA as soon as I saw it and the writing style did too. From the beginning, it captured my interest and was a roller coaster ride until the cliff hanger ending. The theme of fate and destiny throughout the book was very compelling. Add characters that resonate, a murder investigation, a twisty plot, dialogue that rocks and a natural flow and you have a great book.

What I Didn't:

Just be ready to buy book two! Cliffhanger-not a bad thing, you just need to get your e-reader ready!

Overall:

This book is the start to a really great series that I will totally be reading. Available for free at AmazonBN, and Smashwords, you need to check it out. The blend of romance, fantasy, paranormal and YA is really well done and the characters engaged me as a reader. If you want an enjoyable summer read, then you have got to check this one out!

4/5

The Grave Artist Blog Tour and Giveaway

16-year-old Clare can't stop drawing the bizarre, winged skulls she calls "Sammies". Her psychiatrist assumes the compulsive drawings are just expressions of Clare's grief over her father abandoning her. But then Clare discovers that her Sammies are exact matches for the Death's Head on the grave of Samantha Forsythe, a teen who reportedly fell to her death over two centuries ago.

Before long, Clare's drawings morph into cryptic writings that urge her to uncover the truth behind Samantha's death. Together with Neil -- the friend she might be falling for -- Clare scours the local history for clues. She finds that, although Samantha was engaged to a wealthy landowner, there were whispered rumors of her involvement with a younger, biracial man.

Soon, Clare is haunted by disturbing dream images -- a mysterious eye, a broken chain -- that point to someone Samantha called her "Dearest". But who is Dearest? And why does Samantha need Clare to find him so badly?

Isolated and carrying hidden scars of her own, Clare fears her obsession with Samantha will threaten her sanity and safety. But it seems she has no choice in the matter . . .

The Grave Artist is a compelling paranormal murder mystery and a poignant story about loss and what it means thrive in a less-than-perfect reality.

When I heard about the blog tour for this book, I was intrigued. Not having a review copy, I downloaded the sample and was instantly hooked by the book's voice and tone. The story grabbed me from the first page and I liked it so much, I just bought it. Ghost stories are a favorite of mine and when you mix it with characters that are quirky with less than perfect life situations, you have me in a millisecond.

Also, the cover art is great. Those piercing eyes just grab you don't let go. Isn't it funny how a cover can either make or break a book? This one is compelling and I feel like it matches the edgy quality of Clare, the main character, and yet still has a ghostly feel to it too.

I hope you will give this book a try. It is on Kindle for only .99 and is well worth it!

Tour wide giveaway is a hand-hammered sterling silver pendant (about 3/4" wide) on a sterling 16 inch chain. To enter, please enter with the Rafflecopter widget at the end of the post.
